The Father of Faith
Genesis 22:12
He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."
Here is one clear demonstration of the fear of God.
This story has been told many times, but people have different ideas about it. People might think that Isaac was a little baby who put up no struggle; a defenceless baby lying on the altar possibly not crying at all due to ignorance.
However, from Genesis 22, we understand that Abraham's son was at an age where he could communicate with his father, Abraham. He was at an age where he was fully aware that Abraham was about to put a knife through him. He was probably crying out for mercy.
Beyond the thoughts that Abraham struggled with in his mind, he had to resist the cry of his child and hold fast to the relationship that he had with God.
Abraham showed us that beyond what we feel inside, above the circumstances that surround us, the fear of God puts us in a position where we find strength to look to God and walk in His ways.
That fear of God, is the beginning of wisdom.
